I imagine most of us, including me, met them through their idiosyncratic decision to participate in an institution rather foreign to our favorite music, that of Eurovision. The genre in which we could classify them might be a Pop / Rock / Metal hybrid, with a bit of aesthetics from a Rob Zombie movie… or something like that anyway! We are talking of course about the Finns LORDI, whose new release will occupy our attention here.

The tenth album of the “monsters”, who are now burdened by 18 years of history, is called “Killection” and includes 15 (!!) new tracks. Like most of their releases, lyrically it moves somewhere between horror and its parody, while, musically, it is an album that, while generally moving on Heavy Metal paths, nevertheless mixes different styles, from Hard Rock (hallelujah) in “Horror For Hire” to even some Glam elements in” Blow My Fuse” and also more Pop / Disco elements in “Zombimbo”, hence “Compilation” in the parenthesis of the title of the album.

The truth is that their recipe pays off, which is why they have been following it for almost twenty years now, from the classic way of opening every but one of their albums with an introduction, like a trailer of the album, to the structure of the tracks. Flexible, radio tracks, which, if you happen to fall on them, you probably won’t change the station and maybe they’ll drag you somewhere in their rhythm. “Killection”, however, seems to be a bit confusing work with so many references to the band’s influences that it is almost a rip off. For example, “Shake The Baby Silent” which will strongly remind you of “Dragula” by the aforementioned Mr. Rob. Zombie.

So, we are not talking about the best work of the otherwise likeable LORDI, maybe not even one of their good ones. The listener will have fun and this variety of influences does not make the album boring, but after the curiosity of what will follow, during the first hearing, what happens? If you are a fan, you will play it in the background while doing something else, or, otherwise, you will end up putting it aside…
