The symphonic metallers LEAVES ‘EYES have released seven albums since their establishment in 2003. The band was formed by the ex-THEATRE OF TRAGEDY singer Liv Kristine and the band ATROCITY, but after Liv’s departure in 2016, ANGEL NATION’s Elina Siirala was her replacement. For the most part, their sound is pretty typical of the woman fronted symphonic Metal bands. Melancholic, with operatic vocals, some growls here and there, gothic tunes. So does their second release with their new singer and first with their new guitarist Micki Richter.

“Black Butterfly” begins with the same titled track, typical of the LEAVES ‘EYES style. It starts loose and melodic, before it breaks into a more aggressive sound. This formula is being followed throughout the EP. The chorus parts are fine with Elina unfolding her vocals in a more operatic style. They are nice, quite melancholic, but without much energy.

As a last track in the EP, we get a cover version of “Stille Nacht” (“Silent Night”). It’s the traditional German version, so the vocals are in German language. Elina sings gently with the accompaniment of a piano. Not bad as an addition, but this is certainly far from the band’s style.

Whether a version of “Stille Nacht” by LEAVES ‘EYES is necessary is doubtful. But overall, we have three new good songs and a Christmas cover in the spirit of the EP’s release days. So nothing different here from this band, but for those who like their genre and style, it’s surely worth checking out.
