Last time I remember writing about “In One Of These I Am Your Enemy” by the Dutch TERZIJ DE HORDE and making a reference to the cover stating that “…combined with the epic, as well as symbolic, semiotic cover of the album that you can look at for hours…”. Once again I found myself standing on the edge of the abyss, looking live and at a fairly close distance at the cover of this particular release, feeling it with all my senses! The cover of “Disharmonium”, was created by Maciej Kamuda and is clearly influenced by the myth of Cthulhu.

For their previous album “Hallucinogen”, our “Shaman” Lambros Katsakioris had written about the lack of darkness, blackness and evil. In “Disharmonium” the darkness returned, but not in the form of the cold and icy aura, but rather in the form of the terrifying and unexpected erebus. The “horror” comes in many dimensions and successive attacks, catching you mercilessly and pushing you to sink into the bottomless and gloomy levels of the abyss. The industrial aesthetics and the invocations (I can’t characterize them as vocals) of Vindsval make the listening of “Disharmonium” even more demanding, continuing from where “Hallucinogen” left us. The seven -almost hypnotic- compositions are full of dense horror, rich in expressive as well as layered fear, that captivate you and drag you into the abyss of an eerie dissonance…

To be honest, the French for several years now have set the bar very high with every release, being a group of high demands and performance, a seemingly endless source of musical inspiration. I can’t characterize any of their releases as bad, on the contrary they all have their own interest and aesthetics that can suit the ear of the fan of extreme sound. “Disharmonium” definitely needs many listens to digest, process and understand the purpose of its release. The only sure thing is that Debemur Morti managed to bring us yet another elegy of darkness and gloom. Approach it with caution, don’t say I didn’t warn you!

In his house at R’lyeh dead Cthulhu waits dreaming,
yet he shall rise and his kingdom shall cover the Earth.
