Germany, Black Metal, DISSECTION.  Normally this review should have ended right here. I don’t even know if there is any reason to write something, but there has to be a text, so I will write some words.

THE SPIRIT are coming from Germany and I can say that it’s the best band I have listened to playing this style of Black Metal, after THULCANDRA and NETHERBIRD. They were created in 2015 and here we have their second album, “Cosmic Terror” that was released on February 7, 2020. The rest of their discography is completed by their debut album from 2017, titled “Sounds From The Vortex” and an EP from 2019 called “Pillars Of Doom”. With the band members being ex members in bands like MELECHESH, CRIMSON MOON, DETHRONED etc, I think the result and the quality of this record here are guaranteed.

Diving further into the album, we will find clever compositions, with drums and melodies which on one hand, they can dismantle our necks while headbanging and on the other hand they put out a melancholy, not like one of what a Doom Metal band would have, but the melancholy of frozen and misanthropic Black Metal. Those melodies are “dressed up” by beautifully played drums with nice double bass drums and some blast beats here and there where needed without being too much though. The vocals are “dirty” but at the same time clean enough so you can understand every word. All good so far, but describing the whole package is difficult, as it is sometimes hard to describe in writing what a band is trying to get through to the listener with its music. This is partly the case here. I’ll try to put it this way: We have a band playing melodic Black Metal, with the main influence obviously being DISSECTION mainly from the “The Somberlain” era with some elements from “Storm Of The Light’s Bane” era, combined with lyrics about how much worthless the human kind is.

I won’t keep it long. Crystal clear production, very well played throughout the whole album, something not at all easy in the genre they chose to serve, super melodic and even though they are not redefining that style, they manage to give a fresh touch to the melodic Black Metal genre. Keep them in your minds because something tells me that we will meet them again in the future.
