Surely when we hear about Cuba we think, exotic landscapes and beaches, beautiful women and rum flowing abundantly. We have not associated the country with Black Metal of course, that is what SKJULT try to change, who are putting Cuba in the Black Metal map with their new album “Lucifer Hominum Salvator”. SKJULT count only five years of existence, they are a one-man band with Conspirator being the only member, and this year’s album is their third full length. Certainly, the country of origin and the fact that they should hire musicians has prevented the band from touring so releasing new music is the only way to keep their name hot (that’s why in 6 years he released 3 albums).

The album is a remarkable sample of aggressive Black Metal which is influenced by the second wave of Black Metal of the 90’s and mainly by Norway scene. The songs are not monotonous but there is a variety between fast and mid-tempo parts while Conspirator has paid a lot of attention to guitar solos and melodies. Tremolo riffing and blastbeats are of course present while some occult elements are used which, with the mystical lyrics, create a rather dark atmosphere and envelope the overall sound of the album. The production gives a modern feeling to the album with the guitars and the vocals creating a solid sound, while the drums sound a bit buried in the mix.

“Lucifer Hominum Salvator” is a remarkable Black Metal album worth listening. Although it is not of the records that will accompany you for a long time, Conspirator’s effort is commendable, who fights for his vision with SKJULT through difficult conditions and circumstances in a country that is not the ideal for a Black Metal band.
