Six Feet Under – Nightmares Of The Decomposed

Year: 2020
Total Time: 43:31
Label: Metal Blade

SIX FEET UNDER and Chris Barnes do not need any special recommendations as, the second one, is one of the “sickest” singers in the Death Metal act, even if he has lost much appreciation in the recent years (not unfairly). America’s Deathsters return this year with their thirteenth studio album entitled “Nightmares of the Decomposed” (excluding the four Graveyard Classic cover albums) and with the well-known to all of us Jack Owen (formerly DEICIDE and CANNIBAL CORPSE) on one guitar. This gave us high expectations for something good to come, even if inside us we knew that something like this would not happen, based on SIX FEET UNDER’s latest releases…

And that was it! The Americans gave us their worst record of their career so far. I was in a good mood when I started listening to this album (as I am a fan of the band, especially the first three albums) and I thought that even if they could not release something comparable to their first releases, they have the potential for an album at the level of “Commandment” or “Undead”.  The impression that this gave me me after several auditions,  was that the songs sound as if they came from a SIX FEET UNDER’s jam in the studio for fan. Monotonous and mediocre compositions without dynamic, with the band’s characteristic groove been completely ignored. Chris Barnes also seems to be a shadow of his legacy as he sounds tired and his vocals are weak. His performance is so bad that, in some songs, his voice does not match with the rhythm, giving the impression that he has not worked it in studio but he has just sang these songs somewhere else, they recorded it and they released it. Of course, these awful vocals and funny compositions are accompanied with a bad production and a childish cover.

“Nightmares of the Decomposed” is a nightmare, not only for SIX FEET UNDER’s fans but also for all Death Metal fans. In order to recover from listening to this record, I had to follow intensive treatment for several days, which included daily listening to records like “Haunted”, “Maximum Violence” and “Warpath”. The album is a monument to sloppiness and is provocatively bad, making me wonder how Metal Blade decided to release such an awful record! I believe that this release (although I would not like it) will be SIX FEET UNDER’s disaster as even the most fanatic fans cannot find something good in “Nightmares of the Decomposed”, especially after the previous mediocrities of the last years.
