There are times when music strikes this certain sentimental spot that deeply moves you. Even when we’re talking extreme metal, this spot exists and I’d say the debut of the Athenians bullseyes it! DEATH and early SEPULTURA a little bit of OBITUARY a pinch of BOLT THROWER could be the basis of their sound, at least that’s what hit my personal sentimental cord, but don’t take that for granted: the sound is truly multidimensional and every time one searches deeper listening thoroughly, a new plane of musical existence unravels.

Their debut EP runs at about 20’ and it leaves the listener wanting more. There’s some crazy riffing, insane drumming, some intelligent bass lines and as for the vocals, they spit aggression in every word. There are four tracks in the EP and each and every one of them takes its time to unfold and grow with a very natural and musical way. The song structure is not your typical death metal one; there are melodic bridges, single line leads, solos that tend to escape the norm of the genre.

Mastered in Hell’s Kitchen Studio by John Mcris the final character of the sound I’d say is more to the “organic” side than the “edgier” one and the fact suits the band’s style pretty well. The EP’s artwork was made by Natasha Papika and it portrays something like some devilish conjoined twins. All in all, a great debut EP leaving me wondering if there’s a full length coming up soon.
