MORS PRINCIPIUM EST = Death is the beginning (ps. wait a minute, that’s exactly how I started my review of their latest album “Seven”! That’s not a good way to start a review, so let’s move on…). A new beginning is being made by the band’s leader Vile Viljanen after the bad ending with the multi-organist Andy Gillion. “Liberate The Unborn Humanity” seems to be a selection of songs from the band’s demos and also from the albums “Inhumanity” of 2003, “The Unborn” of 2005 and “Liberation=Termination” of 2007, essentially making a pun with names.

Guitarists Jarrko Kokko and Jori Haukio, bassist Teemu Heinola and newly hired drummer Marko Tomila returned for this new beginning, continuing under the auspices of AFM Records, while the vocals were taken over by Viljanen himself, as he has been doing for a long time. MOPS PRINCIPIUM EST are playing though Melodic Death Metal but moving in opposite fields than the Swedes melo deathsters, using extensively use of keyboards. I won’t mention the songs just to fill rows of words except in a couple like “Two Steps Away” and “Valley of Sacrifice Part 2” whichare sounded much better that the original versions, showing that the band has managed to compose remarkable songs in the past!

Even if I don’t find many differences compared to the sound of “Seven”, although the compositions are old, nevertheless mellow riffs are present and, together with keys, are renewing them through a modern filter. Viljanen’s voice sounds mature-worked, and is now gaining ground, something that is most welcomed. What is not well sounded is the drum sound, still more than modern and always having this unacceptable “taperoid” plastic programmed tone that lowers the quality of this re-recording.

This collection can act as an introduction for younger listeners, putting them in the mood of a traditional Melo Death Metal band that has been in the spotlight for almost twenty years. Viljanen showed that he needed this renewal after the separation, looked back at his past, refreshed the compositions and addressed himself primarily to the fans as a “booster dose” of vaccine. For the die-hard fans its definitely a release that has something to offer, for the newer fans an acquaintance collection, for me…….Well, thank you, next!
