Sometimes one has the name but another possesses the grace. The same is true here for this one man project by Sergey Kosin, the Russian artist who follows the musical footsteps of RUSSIAN CIRCLES. DOG CHASING SUN after deciding to abandon the instrumental Stoner Rock manners of their previous records, finally put on their “metallized” Doom Metal costume, since the winter is expected to be harsh and heavy. The dual inspiration for the “designs” of their clothing is the climate that prevails in Russia and then the Desert Post Metal of the huge PELICAN.
As for the rhythmic parts of the album, DOG CHASING SUN pay tribute not only to the biggest Desert/Experimental Rock Fest, Roadburn, with the eponymous track, but to all the grand “tailors”: BATHORY, ICED EARTH, KATATONIA, METALLICA, KYUSS and PARADISE LOST. Listening to the music of the album at various points, you will find yourself drawing parallels with the unforgettable melodies of “Dark Saga” and “Twilight Of the Gods”, with the Southern feeling of “Load (in its Entirety)”, with that sunset in the red desert of “Gardenia” but also with the stable playing and grandiose solo of “True Belief”.
Mr. Kosin may not launch any rockets to Mars, but he manages to create a traveling psychedelic atmosphere within this record. A work that, apart from the eye-catching artistic cover with the bipolar girl , attracts you more and more with its music, conjuring images in the back of your brain for the good and the bad side of yourself. Something close to a musical mapping of your existential Yin-Yang.
A work that stands out among the endless sea of meaningless releases. If you are bored by the same musical staff playing over and over again at your turntable, it is a good opportunity to listen to this album, as it will make you a nice companion, like the warm flame in the fireplace, especially now that we are indoors because of the pandemic situation. So here it is, the second quarantine’s soundtrack.
