CANNABIS CORPSE is a side project by MUNICIPAL WASTE’s bassist Phil “Landphil” Hall and it is obvious that it is a parody band dealing with marijuana and weed in their lyrics. Despite the whole mockery, the music itself is serious Death metal with straight references to groups such as NAPALM DEATH, CARCASS, MORBID ANGEL and BOLT THROWER to name some of them.

From the album title, “Nug So Vile”, we can see a parody of CRYPTOPSY’s “Non So Vile” and a turn to more tech Death Forms. The opening track, “Conquerors Of Chronageddon”, puts us in the driver’s seat, fastens our seatbelt and leaves us breathless with its passionate, dynamic, raw, Death metal, while “Blunt Force Domain” diverts us to more technical Death metal paths with the bass and guitars collaborating in a perfect way. The “Cylinders Of Madness” is the most memorable and catchy song with its melodies and groove and “Blasphemy Made Hash” disorients us with the maelstrom of riffs and the tempo changes of the drums and leads us again to tech Death routes. The most interesting moment of the album is “Dawn Of Weed Possession” (a clear reference to IMMOLATION), a synthesis that sounds like classic and raw Death metal with hypnotic drum tempo and solid bass, which is developing gradually and decisively, reaches the peak with tremendous speed and grants us with the most intense spot of the record. NAPALM DEATH could not be left out from that party with “The Cone Is Red (Long Live The Cone)” and “From Enslavement To Hydrobliterarion”, the last one is the most suitable track to end this listening session with the embodiment of all the music styles we heard in ”Nug So Vile”.

The power trio of “Landphil” on bass and vocals, his twin brother “Hallhammer” on drums and guitarist Adam Guilliams  are excellent players with a great future in front of them and despite the lyrical mockery, they give us a great piece of technical Death metal, yet raw and violent the superlative way. Ignore the non-politically correct weed –themed lyrics and listen to the best and most mature (sic) record CANNABIS CORPSE has ever released.
