The Americans are undoubtedly one of the biggest Hard Rock bands out there. They decided to release “Diamonds In The Rough / Live In The LBD”, and we will try to explain what it consists of and the quality of the songs provided. While many call them a “mainstream band that would like to be Metal while they are not”, I believe that this tag is completely unfair, since this band never said that they are 100% Metal, even if they dare to cover the “Walk”, but they are probably not interested in those tags or comments.
As for the release, it contains a DVD and a CD, which we will review separately.
About the DVD:
The live is from their “Rockstar Taste Of Chaos” tour and is dated on April 10, 2008. We cannot say that the DVD “catches” AVENGED SEVENFOLD’s usual energy but the sound is awesome and the video even more. On the plus side, we notice the live presence of “A little piece of haven”.
About the CD:
I read somewhere that the pieces contained here are the ones that failed to be included in a normal release. Unfortunately, this looks to be true for most of them. We have 7 unreleased tracks, a remix of “Almost Easy” and a different performance of “Afterlife”, as well as two covers (“Walk”, “Flash Of The Blade”). The seven tracks are mostly of average or lower quality, ones that the band would easily write on their free time without much thought. They are also much heavier than the band usually sounds. “Dancing Dead” stands out, and it’s solo is one of the most beautiful and inventive solos that has been heard recently. It could easily stand in a normal release. While the cover of “Walk” sounds bad and uninspiring, the Iron Maiden cover retains some of its original atmosphere.
A must have content for fans, but that’s it. For the non-fans, I suggest to check out “Dancing Dead” instead.
